Angela

Turkana baskets, trivets, trays

A Turkana basket weaver whose seven children are all in school.

“I have joined a group of women who encourage and support me, and I have become a business woman.”

Angela was born in Lodwar before moving to the Kipsongo slum in Kitale. After her parents died she had to beg on the streets to feed her siblings. Life became so difficult that she entered an early marriage. Her husband was unemployed, which led to constant fighting and violence. With no way to feed her seven children, she began salvaging food from dumpsters. She could not afford medical care for her family, and because she could not provide three meals a day, some of her children went to the streets to beg.

When she heard about the Baskets and Beads group, she joined eagerly, seeing a chance to change her life. Angela has a particular talent for Turkana baskets, trivets, and trays. Her children are now in school, and when floods swept away her house, Baskets and Beads helped her build a new, stronger home. Like many of the women, her dream is to move out of the Kipsongo slum and have a place she can call home.

In Angela’s words

“To grow, and to be an example to my children that it doesn't matter what you have gone through, you can still make it in life if you believe.”

Every gift widens the circle.

$150 supports one woman through literacy education. $1,500 to $2,500 can provide a student with a year of education.
