Literacy Program
Literacy changes everything.
When a woman can read, write, and do basic math, she gains greater independence, confidence, and control over her own life and business.
17 women are currently learning to read, write, and build the skills they need to move forward.

Literacy creates independence
More than the classroom.
For many of the women we serve, learning to read and write is about much more than the classroom.
It means being able to keep business records, understand prices and transactions, read important documents, help their children with schoolwork, and make informed decisions for themselves and their families.
Literacy gives a woman another tool to build her future.
How it works
Three days a week. One classroom. Women learning together.
- Reading & writing
- Adult-focused instruction that builds practical literacy skills women can use in their everyday lives.
- Numeracy
- Basic math skills that women can use in their businesses and everyday transactions.
- Materials & support
- Books and learning materials are provided as part of the program.
- Commitment
- The women show up, learn together, and encourage one another along the way.
$150 per woman covers the literacy program, including teaching, books, and learning materials.
What literacy makes possible
A woman can keep her own records. Understand a transaction. Read a document. Help her children with schoolwork. Ask questions. Make informed decisions.
And as her confidence grows, so does her ability to participate fully in her business, her family, and her community.
Literacy strengthens everything else we do. It helps women make the most of business training, table banking, mentorship, and the opportunities available through Baskets and Beads Kenya.
One gift, one woman
Give the gift of literacy.
$150
Provides one woman with literacy education, books, and learning materials.
Reading changes what a woman can negotiate, sign, count, and refuse.
Literacy gives a woman greater independence and confidence to make decisions for herself, her business, and her family.
