Rael Sinde

Sewing & bottle cap trivets

She sews and crafts trivets; her daughter is the first in the family to reach college.

“My children are in school, and my daughter, through the sponsorship program, is in college.”

Rael grew up in Kitale. Her parents could not send her to school, and she was sent to the streets to sell bananas to earn money for food. Her father was an alcoholic and a violent man, and Rael's life was filled with pain and bitterness. After she was molested on the streets, her family treated it as a shame and forced her into an early marriage. One day her husband left and never came back, leaving Rael as the sole provider.

She spent her days doing laundry for people and her evenings selling tomatoes on the streets. One of her customers introduced her to the Baskets and Beads group, and it changed her life. The group helped her start a business that allowed her to provide for her children. Rael is hardworking and focused, a member of the tailoring group making dresses and skirts, and she is known for her bottle cap trivets.

Her daughter Daisy was sponsored by the group, finished high school, and is now in college studying information technology, the first in the family to attend college. Rael's dream is to sell her products consistently, have a stable monthly income, and own a home for herself and her children.

In Rael’s words

“To own my tailoring shop where I can make clothes and beads and sell.”
