Alvin is a 20-year-old from the Kipsongo slum, on the cusp of a major life change. As the eldest of five siblings, he is the first in his family to attend school, and he is now set to join university.

His journey has been a challenging one. With an absent father and a sick mother unable to afford his school fees, Alvin dropped out and found himself on the streets, begging and searching for food in dumpsters. The extreme hunger he faced led him to sniff glue as a way to cope with the pain and the cold. Yet even in that situation he never lost hope. When he met the Baskets and Beads Kenya team, he told them how deeply he wanted to return to school, knowing it was the only way to change his family's future.

Since Baskets and Beads Kenya began sponsoring his education in 2021, Alvin has left the streets behind and now lives with his mother. He has grown from a frightened boy into a confident and determined young man. Having completed his high school diploma, he is now pursuing his dream of becoming an engineer.

School was paid for from 2021 through the Baskets and Beads Kenya student sponsorship program: fees, uniform, supplies, and mentorship from the Kenya team.

In Alvin’s words

“Since Baskets and Beads Kenya, I have been able to stop going to the streets and now I live with my mother. I have been able to go back to school and finish my high school diploma.”
