In December 2023 the team met Fridah, an 18-year-old girl under enormous stress. Her aunt, who had been her guardian and was paying her school fees, had suddenly told her to leave the house and withdrawn her support. Fridah's mother, a single parent of five with no work, could not provide for her or even feed her.

Fridah explained that her aunt had grown jealous because Fridah was performing exceptionally well in school, often outperforming the aunt's own children. The aunt had hidden all of Fridah's academic transcripts, which made enrolling anywhere else nearly impossible.

Despite that, the team was able to enroll her in the sponsorship program, and found a school willing to accept her without the transcripts. Fridah began her new term in January 2024 and is now preparing to sit her national exams. Her dream is to become a doctor.

School has been paid for since 2024 through the Baskets and Beads Kenya student sponsorship program: fees, uniform, supplies, and mentorship from the Kenya team.

In Fridah’s words

“Since Baskets and Beads Kenya, I have been able to go back to school and pursue my dreams. I know that I will achieve all I put my mind to.”
