Melody and her younger brother Oliver joined the sponsorship program in January 2025. That month their mother, Hellen Nalimo, one of the original five women of Baskets and Beads Kenya, passed away from complications of diabetes.

For three years she had struggled to manage her illness. The cost of treatment and medication meant she often missed insulin doses, and with no electricity at home she had no way to store insulin, so she travelled to the hospital for every injection.

After their mother's death, Melody and Oliver had nowhere to live and moved in with their aunt. Through the sponsorship program they are able to attend school and receive daily meals and the other things they need. Both are full of courage and determination, and Baskets and Beads Kenya is committed to seeing them reach their dreams.

School has been paid for since January 2025 through the Baskets and Beads Kenya student sponsorship program: fees, uniform, supplies, and mentorship from the Kenya team.

In Melody’s words

“Since Baskets and Beads Kenya, I have been able to continue with my education after the passing of my mom.”
